The 25 centavos tipos
The
25 centavos are the monster issue, making up perhaps as much as 2/3rds of the
tipos production. The 25 centavos stamp was the most common postal rate at the
time. Even more common than the 12 centavos stamp. Considering Mexico overall,
there were 3,127,800 of the 25 centavos stamps produced. There were only 2,707,400 of
the 12 centavos stamps produced. So although the 25 centavos were more common,
they were not much more common.
Still, the forgers wanted to optimize their efforts. So it would have been much more sensible for the forgers to produce 25 centavos stamp which still had a high demand by the customers of these forgeries. The 12 centavos stamps probably had a high demand, but were only half as profitable. So today we might speculate that the forgers only produced a sufficient number of the 12 centavos stamps to satisfy the demand from their very best clients.
All 29 of the offices known to have representative tipos had 25 centavos tipos. In a few cases, offices are represented with only 25 centavos tipos. Cordova and Lagos are the two offices with 25s and no other denominations.
